The pawns floated off the ground a few inches and waited for the first move. They didn’t look powerful, but I knew they weren’t alone and more would come. I pulled out my trap and whispered a spell to enlarge it. My knight took his place beside me. The shadows of the room danced and played across the walls. I made my move forward.
The pawn across from me moved forward as well grinning at his brothers as he did so. They were cunning, they wouldn’t be easy to trick like my fellow man. This was their game and I was just another player.
My knight stayed put as I took another step but before I situated myself I was ambushed. The pawns rushed in, more than the required amount for a game; dozens of them coming from nowhere. I was
quickly overwhelmed. I kicked and punched out bringing down one mouse after another. They still got back up and continued their onslaught. My knight sensed the danger and stepped in. making an L shaped move across the board and piercing a mouse through its heart. The squeal of death sent the others back to their half of the board. I panted and waited for their next move. This wouldn’t be the average game of chess.
A couple broke apart from the group and made their way along the wall in the shadows. I kept my eyes on them as well as the rest of the mice. Yet still somehow I missed something. The mice that had mystic qualities were now grouped with a few technical pawns. The Technic pawns formed a solid barrier and moved forward an inch at a time. I hesitated before taking a small step back. They were simple and easy to beat one at a time but as a group pawns were useful, strong.
I whispered some magic under my breath; anything to help my trap take down the mice. The energy that had surrounded it the past few days was fading. The Technic pawns moved forward as one unit as a few mystic’s tried to out maneuver me. I held my ground and sent my trap forward as I used my magic to take on the approaching mystic mice. I took out two mystic mice before I was able to see the damage my trap had caused. Its energy was faded even more but the mice at the base of it were no more. I moved farther across the room.
I breathed in as the pawns defeat became noticeable. Most had already retreated back across the room, their numbers no longer great enough to overwhelm me. I charged them and took down two mystic pawns easily. When I turned around to get a few more I found a mystic knight in front of me instead.
His eyes glowed white beneath its hood. His body was covered in armor and as he floated there in front of me he pointed his sharp blade at my heart, and then attacked. I quickly jumped back out of his way but he kept coming. In my retreat I muttered a spell to form my own sword in order to attack the knight. The moment the tip of the blade appeared the knight was on me. Our blades clashed, sending sparks into the air. His attack was brutal never missing a breath just taking me on until I backed farther across the room. When I was farther back he left me there in defeat and went to guard his half of the room. That’s when I noted the door.
Small and out of the way, it stood at the very furthest end of the room. A few pawns stood in front of it and a second mystic knight. I wasn’t sure where he had come from but I had a suspicion it had something to do with that door. I took a moment to catch my breath before I sent my trap after the mystic knight. The battle felt endless. Neither trap nor mouse wanted to be defeated. The metal clashed and echoed across the room and at last so did a whimpering squeak. The mystic knight fell to the floor with a clatter; my trap was left even weaker than before.
I made my way across the room inching along the wall trying to reach the door. The other knight saw my progression and started his own onslaught; beating me back until I was panting at the front door. He hovered away from me before attacking again. It was senseless; I had to use his strategy against him. I whispered an old spell that would make my trap follow my moves. When I attacked so would my trap. In this way the second knight fell.
Panting I glanced around the room; the chess pieces that were left backed away allowing the next foe to make its way towards me. Even the straggling knights moved away. The bishop held his staff in front of him facing me with a smirk. I waited for his move, and was unprepared when it came.
He slammed his glowing scepter on the ground and without making a move sent bolts of electric energy at my chest. My makeshift sword shattered into nothing and I crumpled against the ground. My trap attacked but was also sent to the ground; the bolts of energy easily piercing through his metal armor. My trap was weakening, slowing down and becoming less accurate. The first waves of panic began to take over my thoughts. How would I get out?
“I don’t” I closed my eyes preparing myself for defeat, and all that that would entail.
