I stumbled my way out of the tower and down to the arch where I had acquired my runic tattoos. When I got there I realized I had no idea where I was headed. I needed to get back but wasn’t even close to knowing how to do that.
“Now what!” I grumbled tossing my arms into the air. At that moment a ripping sound shattered the silence as the Realm ripper mouse stepped into existence. I stared him down as he smirked at me.
“Seen enough hunter?” it asked mischievously.
“You have a knack for turning up at times like this.” I replied. He raised an eyebrow at me.
“Follow me then.” he said as he split the air between us. “This will be the last time you see this place Plankrun.” There was a look in his eye that I didn’t like but he was indeed my only way back. At least

The bishop waited for me to get on my feet, he would make no move unless I made one first. I stayed on my knees watching as my trap circled in for another go but it was blasted back once again. The bishop hadn’t even twitched. His eyes swiveled back to me, taunting me to come closer. My trap made no more attempts on the mouse. Its energy was draining and it had become clumsy.
I called for my traps retreat, but it was blasted three more times before it made it safely to my end of the checkered room. The trap took its stand behind me as I scrambled to my feet. The Bishop still hadn’t moved. I took to the shadows with my trap as my defense and tried to make it along the wall as far as I could manage. The bishop was no fool though; he sent pawns in search for me in the dim

The pawns floated off the ground a few inches and waited for the first move. They didn’t look powerful, but I knew they weren’t alone and more would come. I pulled out my trap and whispered a spell to enlarge it. My knight took his place beside me. The shadows of the room danced and played across the walls. I made my move forward.
The pawn across from me moved forward as well grinning at his brothers as he did so. They were cunning, they wouldn’t be easy to trick like my fellow man. This was their game and I was just another player.
My knight stayed put as I took another step but before I situated myself I was ambushed. The pawns rushed in, more than the required amount for a game; dozens of them coming from nowhere. I was

I stretched my arm out in front of me. The runes were a flat black, not like the Ripper’s runes that glowed bright blue. I knew that he said it would be best to not touch the runes on the wall, but could it really hurt to finally understand the language around me? I looked at my untouched arm before stretching it out once more to touch the left wall. The instant my fingertips brushed the symbols the runes on my right arm exploded in a blinding flash of blue light.
I felt the runes being carved into my left arm, I watched them fade from the wall once more but appear again on my arm. One rune at a time, the pain felt like forever, but it was quickly finished. I made a fist and held up my arm, it glowed dully then faded again to black, with a tint of transparency as if not

The mist was suffocating. Who would want to live here? I stood carefully taking it all in. there was a silence here, so deep that I knew I was alone. Not knowing where to go or what to do, I took out the stolen page. The whole thing was devoted to alternate realms, some with lots of detail. Some realms were considered dead, empty. Others were dangerous, meant solely for the banishment of wrongdoers. I could only wonder what type of realm I stood in.
On a hill a ways up there was a crumbling tower. Some long dead monument of a lost kingdom. I felt the earth beneath my feet crunch and give, void of life. The mist swirled around my body as

Upon the stone table I noted the pile of little blue stones. The Forgotten Book had mentioned things like this before. It called them ancient runes. They had an unknown origin, and I had a suspicion the acolytes brought them here.

I tore the island apart; the mice ran in fear of my wrath. I could no longer pursue them myself; instead I had to use my traps. Mice were very smart and very stupid at the same time. Something about cheese had them coming back for more even if it meant they’d risk death to get it. So, I relaxed in the spring and let my creation do all the work.
I had never been one of power; actually I was usually the furthest from it. I was an average spellcaster, and was never close to royalty, but now I was the one calling the shots. I first had to bend to the will of the seasons, and then I bent back. If I thought spring took too long, I brought along summer, or if fall was too dull I’d reign in a torrent of snow. It was out of the vermin’s hands. I felt the

I was no longer a hunter, no, I was a predator. The garden had changed me, warped me into something it wanted me to be, forced me to become something new. I was a lot stealthier, constantly moving, never letting them gain the upper hand. I worked my way through the different mice at a rate I thought unobtainable before.
I had to use magic’s I never thought I was capable of, on mice I use to think powerful. Bah! This was my garden now, and soon I would take the tower. I let revenge push me to the edge and back again, but in doing so I had to let go of everything else. I had to forget Plankrun and his chosen path on the mainland. I was not allowed to dwell on it I had to change as the seasons changed around me. I had to learn.
Once I mastered the magic I was able to live quite comfortably in the garden. I was able to push the rain away from me, forming a safe dome of dry air around my body. Summer was nothing when I

The next thing I became aware of was the lack of feeling in my legs.
I built up a wall of snow to block the wind, but that cost me my hands. I couldn’t feel any part of me any longer. The cold was consuming me. How long had it been, how many minutes, hours, days, had I been trapped? Magic was out, I tried it but nothing worked. I blamed the cold, it over took my

======================================================================= When I at last hit the bottom steps I was thrown back into darkness. Remembering the Keeper’s candle I had snagged I pulled it out to light it. The flame was unusually bright but I expected it was just because any type of light would be brighter than usual in the darkness. Only as I used the candle, I noticed other things about it. Like how it wouldn’t light every hallway; the flame would go black. I felt like somehow the candle knew I was lost and was leading me to a place I would want to be.
Because I had no particular destination I let the candle guide me. Only taking the paths it lit up and avoiding the darker, threatening passages. Deeper and deeper into the depths of the catacombs the light guided me. I probably walked miles. Tunnels and passages crisscrossed in every direction and I

Kneeling beside me was a mouse I had yet encountered. Glowing runes covered his whole body; like tattoos they wrapped around his arms, legs, and chest. Without hunting, this place was nothing but a nagging mystery. I watched from a distance as my trap came to life and tousled with the new mouse. The mouse had a glove full of seeds, he tossed the glowing balls of life at the ground near my trap and they instantly sprouted tangled plant like weeds, but the knight sidestepped them easily and took down the mouse with one swipe of his jousting pole.
I recovered the unconscious mouse and placed fresh cheese upon the trap that had returned to its still form. I breathed in deep, pulling spring air into my lungs. I was enjoying the weather after the rain gave it a rest, but that probably meant summer was coming and that was bound to be

I had fused together the magic of each of the separate pieces into one powerful trap. It just needed one more thing. I reached into my pockets with cold hands and pulled out a small blue feather. I felt a sudden jolt of energy rush through my body as I held it. Most wizards would kill to have one of these, and I had two. Placing the feather on the head of the knight had an immediate effect. I was glad too, for I had no living shards in my pockets.
The knight and his horse walked in circles around me before coming to stand upon my base. A base that suddenly looked feeble next to my new trap. I racked my head a bit trying to think of a new way to craft a base. We’d never crafted bases before, but there was a first time for everything.
I reached into my pocket and pulled out an old book. Runes glowed dimly on the binding and the pages whispered dark secrets of the past. It was the Forgotten Book, Volume 1. I only hoped Plankrun still

"There, that's it." The Acolyte turned to the stone where the Sorcerer lay. As I watched, the flesh of the mouse melted off leaving nothing but bone behind. I held back vomit as I stared appalled. Morning broke all too soon. Before I left I wrote a bit in my journal as well as read from the Forgotten Book. I nodded my agreement, which sent new waves of pain through my skull. I winced. "How much cheese did I lose?" I asked.
